(4/5) Active Listening

Today we learned about effective communication. Communication is not just a one-way street, but it requires a collaborative effort from all parties involved. Most of us are NOT good communicators. We learned that every story has more than two sides. There is a distinct difference between hearing what your followers have to say and listening to what they have to say. You have to utilize what you hear, the feedback from your followers in order to grow your organization in a unanimous direction. Listen, listen, listen...STOP TALKING! If you can not listen, you can not effectively lead. There is a lot of knowledge to be gained if you would actively listen.

Active listening was emphasized in lecture this past evening.

What is active listening? How can you be an active listener? And what changes when leaders start listening actively? when followers listen actively?

  1. Active listening to me is the practice of keeping a constant open ear to everyone around you. Being an active listener is as easy as taking the time to hear what everyone else around you has to say. When a leader takes the time to be an active listener, they are becoming a better leader by taking into account everything they hear from their followers.

  2. Active listening is making sure that you are paying attention to what someone is saying by asking questions and making sure that they know that you understand what they are saying. The way to be an active listener is to make sure and ask questions and verify the information that they are telling you. I think that the changes that happens when leaders are active listeners to their follower is they get a better work environment from their followers since they are actually listening to what they have to say. When a follower is a good active listen it shows the leader that you really care about what is going on and that you are a good worker.

  3. Active listening is understanding that you can learn something from others by listening to them. If you are actively listening, it shows that you really care about what this person is saying, feeling, and etc. You can be a better active listener by forgetting everything else at the time and put your life on hold and take a moment to try and learn something new. When leaders start listening actively, its clear in their actions that they followed what that person said. When followers listen, they react and act.

  4. Active listening is not hearing, but understanding and internalizing what the other person is saying. It means you focus on what the person speaking has to say, you think about it. Ask questions for clarification and provide useful responses based on what you have absorbed from the conversation. Participate in the conversation, don't be distracted.

  5. Active listening is understanding what people are saying and putting a significant meaning to it. It's when you care about what the person is saying. You're not distracted or thinking about other things, but really understanding what the person has to say, responding to what they're saying, and giving your time to them.

  6. Active listening is asking questions as the person is talking to you. This helps you to understand better what is actually being said. Being part of the conversation helps you understand things better.

  7. Active listening is not just hearing someone talk but comprehend what they are saying. You really understand what the person is talking about. You ask questions if you are unclear of something to get a better understanding. You can participate in active listening by not being distracted by other things around you and provide useful responses back to the other person. A leader can't lead others until they learn to lead themselves.

  8. Active listening is when you are really focusing on what the person is saying that is talking to you and interacting with them as they speak through body language or verbal responses. You can be an active listener by taking notes, nodding your head, laughing, answering questions, etc. When leaders start to actively listen, the followers can feel that positive energy and it will charge the conversation onto new platforms. When followers actively listen, things get done. The leader can communicate all of their ideas/plans and the followers can carry that out through active listening.
