Weekly Up-date (4/12)

Group 16,

Hello. I hope that everyone was able to enjoy the weekend of great weather!

Great news... only 2 more class periods left for the semester of CSR309!

For Monday (today):

1) Your evaluations of me (your leader) are due by 4PM to Tina Alsup Alsup@purdue.edu.
Text me if you have any questions, as well as a confirmation that you have submitted your evaluation to Tina. :)

2) I will be submitting my final grade records to Julie in class this evening. If you have given me an assignment to re-grade (Tall and Julie), I will report my scoring to you this evening with a grade explanation. If I am missing any grades for you, expect a phone call some time today.

3) The question for class today is:
Is there any hope for us and the Universe?
We will also be discussing the Pain exercise and extra credit.

For Wednesday:

I assume this will be somewhat of a semester review, but do not have confirmation of this.

More to come...

As always, email or text me with any questions or concerns.

Thanks!

Erika

(4/5) Active Listening

Today we learned about effective communication. Communication is not just a one-way street, but it requires a collaborative effort from all parties involved. Most of us are NOT good communicators. We learned that every story has more than two sides. There is a distinct difference between hearing what your followers have to say and listening to what they have to say. You have to utilize what you hear, the feedback from your followers in order to grow your organization in a unanimous direction. Listen, listen, listen...STOP TALKING! If you can not listen, you can not effectively lead. There is a lot of knowledge to be gained if you would actively listen.

Active listening was emphasized in lecture this past evening.

What is active listening? How can you be an active listener? And what changes when leaders start listening actively? when followers listen actively?

Weekly Up-date (4/5)

Hello again group 16!

Please read this up-date very thoroughly, as we only have 3 more class periods to wrap-up what has been a good semester of class. :)

As you all might know, I will be turning in my "Individual Performance Evaluations" next week. In response I would like to give you all one last warning as to what I am missing from you and what you guys have done a great job with.

Missing:

1) I need for all of you to email me the grade you received on IM2 (eearl@purdue.edu). Please send me a blank email with your score in the subject line. This way I don't have to open every single email to retrieve your scores.
2) Blogs... many of you are either not checking, or not responding to our Team Blog. Please go through the Blog Index and make sure that you have responded to:
-(3/29) Time Management
-This week's Blog entitled (4/5) Active Listening
-Taking the lead, my day as Assistant Manager on the evening of your promotion
*I will be posting a blog in response to both Wednesday's class, as well as next Monday's class so be on the look out to "reply" to those.
3) I need for Lisa Butler, Courtney Hurlburt, Abigail Lewark, Erin Thelen, and Julie Wilson to please email me (or print out and bring to class Wednesday) the completed record of what you have or have not turned in for this class. I will email you the Excel file.

Now for the good stuff...

1) The following team members were on Feinberg's list for "very, very, very good" IM2s:
-Shawna Harris
-Jenna Jerkovich (also received most creative title for "Detecting Leadership" on Sherlock Holmes)
-Lisa Butler
...And the list continues with team members who made Feinberg's "Wall of Fame" for their IM2s:
-Courtney Hurlburt
-Erin Thelen
-Ariel Martin
-Chelsea Meade
-Kaitlin Ward

Great work!!!

2) As I look over out attendance records, I am proud to say that we average about 2 missing teammates per class.... that is pretty impressive! I REALLY appreciate your dedication to coming to class. Let's finish strong with perfect attendance.

3) We only have 3 more classes left. Whoot whoot!!

Last, but not least, you should all be aware that our Group Memo assignment is due this Wednesday, 4/7.

Instructions from Syllabus:

"Select an article from a business magazine or newspaper. Write a leadership analysis of whatever the article is concerning. The article must be recent (last 6 months). The article must be turned in with the paper. One copy of the paper and article is to be turned in during class and one copy of the paper is to be email to (xdj1@purdue.edu) with "GM1" in the subject line."

This afternoon, I will be emailing everyone a copy of the rough draft of our Group Memo. Please read over carefully, make sure that it adheres to the expectations in the syllabus, edit it for grammar and content, and email me your revisions by 10pm Tuesday (4/6). I expect EVERY ONE to peer edit this paper... if you do not it will decrease your grade significantly. If time is an issue, call or text me before the deadline at (765) 749-1212.

Best Regards.

Erika

Extra Credit

Hello Group!

Just wanted everyone to know that in the 23 page "Pain" document that was attached to Feinberg's email there is an extra credit opportunity on page 17. It states:

· 10 extra credit points (submit by 4/6 5PM)…pick a response and tell me why this one resonates with you. Why is the one you picked so interesting. (write a short paragraph or a couple of sentences not a dissertation please). Pain response in subject line please.

That's all! Hope everyone had a great weekend, and EASTER!

(3/29) Time Management

Today's class emphasised the importance of time management.

Recommended Literature:
The Purpose Driven Life, by Rick Warren
"If you want your life to have impact, focus it! Stop dabbling. Stop trying to do it all. Do less. Prune away even good activities and do only that which matters most. Never confuse activity with productivity. You can be busy without a purpose, but what's the point?" (Pg. 32-33)
First Things First, by Stephen Covey
"Every human has four endowments- self awareness, conscience, independant will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom... the power to choose, to respond, to change."
Feinber gave the example of categorizing your time into- (1) Important and Urgent, (2) Urgent, but Not Important, (3) Not Urgent, but Important, and (4) neither Urgent nor Important... ditch all this!

Taking the Lead, My Day as the Assistant Manager

Due: 12AM the night of your class session as Assistant Manager

As Assistant Manager you were responsible for:

1. Tracking attendance
2. Recording participation for each individual group member

Now... write a brief summary of what your group members can take away from your experience as Assistant Manager for the day.

E.g.- Did you face any challenges? Was your job too easy or boring? Should Assistant Managers have more or less responsibility? Did your promotion encourage you to engage in the class more than you normally would? Should our group have delegated an Assistant Manager right from the start, why or why not? What did you learn today that might be applicable to a similar position in the real world?

Thanks for your help today!

3. Blog contribution will be considered as a separate performance measurement. Replies should be a minimum of three sentences. Each group member is expected to reply to one post for every class session held. Posts requiring a reply will be designated by the group manager within context of the post itself. All posts are to be read and additional contributions to the blog are encouraged. Concerns and comments about assignments, course content, or organizational functioning that is not covered in the Blog can be emailed to the group manager (Erika Earl, eearl@purdue.edu).

4. In Class Participation will be considered in evaluation of your final grade. This is to be determined and tracked by your group manager. Reports of your in-class participation will be available through your group manager after each class session.

5. All approved Extra Credit work is to be tracked by the individual group member. 6. Grade disputes should be communicated to your group manager within 48 hours of your assignment being returned for your dispute to be considered. In the case of a grade dispute, grade allocation is at the discretion of your Team President and is to be addressed with upper management by your group manager.

**A print-out of your assignment scores, attendance, as well as participation scores will be available through your group manager at every class session. If you would like to inquire about your progress, a request should be made at the beginning of class and time will be designated after that class period, or with-in the class period immediately following. I will only be carrying out one mandatory grade check during the second-to-last week of class. This grade check will be on an individual basis as to address final grade, attendance, and participation concerns.

**As a group, we will build cohesiveness through working to achieve:

1. pro-active communication- the willingness by each individual member to express/execute their ideas for team building within our group. Motivational media, pictures, literature, team building exercises, etc. can be posted onto the group blog or brought to class.

Own your seat, encourage your neighbors to be present in our group formation, and hold them accountable when they are not. As your group manager, I will always aim to present myself in the most accessible way possible.

**If we present ourselves as a team, communicate as a team, and work as a team, we will be the winning team :)

C. Every member is to contribute to achieving team cohesiveness

**As a group, we will build team cohesiveness through working to:

1. achieve high marks- do your part in obtaining the highest marks according to the grading standards given.

2. contributing 100% to group activities- everyone is expected to give 100% to group work. If you don't feel like you have a role to play, make one or make it known that you do not know what yours is. Preparation is not just for the group manager, play in active role in brain storming, planning, and execution.

3. establishing higher standards of achievement- work to find the meaning behind the tasks delegated by the CEO. If the purpose has not been communicated, create one that your team can draw from... and share it with your group. As a group, we should be establishing what knowledge we are gaining that can lead us towards achieving our objectives, and communicating it to the rest of our team.

General Workers/Class
In response to the class activity that we did in class on Monday (3/22) I observed that some of you are confused about the organizational structure of this class. Above I have included a spread of how our organizational structure has fallen into place, which I developed according to standards given in the course syllabus. I think this is a great tool in understanding how communication should be taking place within our organization, our organization being our CSR 309 class.

Group Managers are directly accountable for the work put out by their General Workers (group members). Group Managers are in place to relay instructions, gather information, identify the need for help, identify resources, make resources available as needed, and share in-group decision making when appropriate. Group Managers should be communicating the work of their group to the Executive Vice President(s).
Executive Vice President(s) are in place to further facilitate clear communication from upper management. They should be working with our Presidents to establish measurable achievements and effective solutions to areas seeking improvement. This is necessary so that Managers are able to understand and communicate what goal(s) we are working towards, and where we stand as individuals, groups, and an organization in achieving those goals.
The Presidents are our direct links to the top of the chart... CEO, Richard Feinberg. Although the CEO represents a position of ultimate authority, real decision making authorities for all levels of the organization have been given to our Presidents.

Why has our organization not achieved cohesiveness?

In my opinion, our CEO is too distant; he is "A REALLY BAD LEADER" despite the fact that he has delivered a course syllabus which clearly states both our Learning and Outcome Objectives:

1. Be a Better Leader in Your Own Life, Articulate 5 instances when a decision was made with awareness of some of the principles discussed in class.

2. Be a Better Leader for Others, Articulate 5 instances when a decision was made with awareness of some of the principles discussed in class.

3. Write Better

4. See Leadership and Analyze Leadership Everywhere that You Look, You will be given a choice of a current newspaper or national business magazine and be able to articulate he various leadership points in an article or articles.

5.
(10...20...+) years from now... you will be a better leader for yourself and others and be able to articulate how CSR 309 was responsible for part of that.

Measurable Outcomes:

Test (200 pts.)
1 Group Memos (400 pts.)
1 Individual Memos (300 pts.)
Leadership Brochure (100 pts.)
Leadership Evaluations of Member (200 pts.)
Various Other Points (100 pts.)

Total: 1300 pts.

A= 1170+
B= 1040-1169
C= 910-1039
D= 780-909
F= 779 and below

BUT... these objectives have not been carried out effectively. Procedures have been changed or lost in translation, performance expectations have not been clearly established, work evaluation is not based on clear-cut standards, and poor performance continues to go by without understood or effective repercussions.

How do we change this?

As we have learned from course content like It's Your Ship, in an effective organization members of every rank can contribute to the solution.
"No matter how fantastic your message is, if no one is receiving it, you aren't communicating. You must have mastery of all means of communication, along with the willingness to use them-- otherwise, you're just talking to yourself." (It's Your Ship, Pg. 58)

This Blog, along with the Team Leader Blog have been established as the most effective means of communication for our organization. Julie (our President) has been asked to follow our Group 16 Blog, and a request for the CEO to follow this blog has also been made.

I look for you all to contribute to this post, suggestions as to what other ways we can effectively communicate, what information has not been communicated, and how we can utilize communication to develop greater Group and Team cohesiveness.

Refer to the post on Group 16 Goals and Performance Expectations to find out what contributions I expect you to make to Group 16, team Julie, and CSR 309 as an organization.

Exam Review

Attached to an email sent earlier this evening you will find the Exam 1 Book Review, compiled by our Team Leaders. I have email you a copy of an external summary of The Leadership Challenge, which I found through Scribd.com. I would encourage everyone to re-address the information given during the Kirk Weisler leadership workshop. Your fellow Team Leaders and I thought that he contributed pertinent information to our course, which Feinberg might find relevant enough to include on the exam. I have added a link to Weisler's personal web-site in our "Useful Websites for Leaders" section.

As a side note, we are now 9/16 in contribution to this blog. I have re-sent email invitations to those of you who have not yet joined the blog as a "Team Member". You MUST follow the link within the email invitation to have posting privileges for the blog. I find it helpful to bookmark this blog URL in your "favorites" so that you can easily check-up on it to keep up-to-speed on class activity. I look to further develop this blog to allow for your individual feedback on what we are learning in class. Contributing to this blog can greatly increase your involvement and success in this course.

As you know, you are free to post comments or concerns to this post. You are always welcome to send me an email if the issue is not public. I will look to respond to both methods of communication.

Best of Luck.

Welcom to the Group 16 Blog!

In response to my own personal frustration with mass emailing, I have decided to create our own Group 16 blog. Although we are now faced with a mere 5 remaining weeks of class, I think this will facilitate to better communication... and in return, better understanding of what we can take away from CSR 309.

I will be posting all of my group messages on this blog. Please save the web address to your favorites. To follow this blog you will need to sign up for a google account. In the right margins of the blog home page, click on a grey box reading "Follow" and it should prompt you. I am aware that many of you will be on Spring Break for the next week, but I encourage you to join the blog before-hand as I will be posting exam information immediately upon return from SB.

I understand that there will still be a need for emailing and I encourage you to do so for any immediate concerns or questions. This is simply the most efficient way for us to track our individual and group progress, as the leaders have been doing through their own blog.

Stay posted.

Erika
